This pull request drags in changes from my previous two pull requests (since they're necessary for the code to build).
I'm fairly sure I've correctly diagnosed the problem here but I ended up somewhat deeper in the inner workings of the library than I originally intended! Comments from the original author would be greatly appreciated.
