Welcome to the NiceSystem wiki!
As of 2016-08-20, we are of the opinion that systemd is worse than nothing for technical and social reasons. However, the systemd project has too much momentum to turn around now, so we've decided to try to obsolete it rather than argue against it.
To be clear, we do not intend to restore SysVInit but rather to take whatever's good about systemd and implement it in a more Unix-friendly fashion:
- small components with simple interfaces
- human-friendly interfaces of all kinds
- scripts
- text (likely HTTP) APIs
- readily explored and scripted CLIs
- principle of least surprise
- someone who has never heard of systemd should still feel comfortable on a NiceSystem
- someone who is devoted to systemd should also feel comfortable on a NiceSystem
We need to find out what systemd does that people require of a drop-in replacement. Satisfying 90% of use cases is one of our requirements.
To be a compelling replacement we have to prove we perform as well as or better than systemd, which means we have to measure both systemd and our replacements.
Of course we have to actually build the replacements.
For our replacements to be valuable, they need a devoted community.
We all have jobs and hobbies already. We're not in a hurry and are doing this for fun and justice. It may take a while.
