Summary

keep Python 2 compatible class structure and unicode helpers
adjust README install instructions for uv while still supporting Python 2.7+
note continued Python 2.7 support in HISTORY
provide a pyproject.toml that works on Python 2 and 3

Testing

pytest -q on Python 2.7
