The bicycle. Brilliant for sport and transit; but only if you are riding the right size. Otherwise a bike is possibly the most uncomfortable thing ever created by humankind.
Bob and I made Geometry Geeks to allow easy comparison of bikes across brands and across cycling disciplines. And while Geometry Geeks' data-table based approach is good, a simple visualisation would be so much better.
When we asked many people about a visual comparison, they told us that "yes!" this would be "great to have", "make bike geometry much more accessible", and "the missing thing on Geometry Geeks".
However, they also made it very clear that this would never be a paid-for feature that would ever generate enough revenue to pay for its development.
We're creating this project, in the hope that there is enough need for an open source bike visualisation for the web (e.g. magazines, retailers, and Geometry Geeks) that we can bring together enough interested people to make something really great.
This project is very much in its infancy - we are still capturing requirements of what it should do.
If you're reading this, you can help. Please read on!
-
get enough coders, designers and cyclists together, to
-
build a javascript module for use on the web, which:
-
understands bicycle geometry (and perhaps makes intelligent assumptions) to
-
create beautiful line drawings of bicycles [road, mountain, TT, tri or ...], then
-
overlays multiple bicycles to allow comparison, with controls to allow the user to:
- pan/zoom
- control which bike is 'the current focus'
-
The javascript module should be for 'modern' browsers used today (and tomorrow)
- Do you know Bikes and Geometry?
- Please help explain the geometry to the people who can code?
- Bob and I are making a start: Drawing a Bike
- Do you want to compare bike geometry?
- Please raise an issue to tell us how to make this better?
- Do you know JavaScript / The web?
- Please write some code, or make suggestions about the project?
