PI: Stefan Schlanderer

Institutions: University of Southampton

Application Area: HiPSTAR is a structured multi-block compressible fluid dynamics code for general curvilinear/ cylindrical co-ordinates. It is used in a wide spectrum of applications.

Starting point: CPU code with PGI and Cray, GPU implementation with Cray (but not PGI), but with unsatisfactory performance.

Experiences:

  • compiler bugs and limitations
  • more MPI ranks per node increased performance
  • significant speedup achieved over CPU version
  • some components work only with PGI others only with Cray
  • networking with OpenACC community

Future: Not public code; future depends on whether we get access to GPU platforms (would consider development or preparatory project)
