This PR improves the developer experience by clarifying build documentation
and adding a basic GitHub Actions workflow to verify builds.

Changes included:

Added a global prerequisites section
Clarified Linux cross-compile vs native build sections
Fixed minor documentation typos
Added a GitHub Actions workflow to build on Linux and macOS

No functional or API changes are introduced.
