Hi, when I tried to use the original Slight-backup (from F-Droid) to import SMS messages I had exported from another phone on a newer device (Android 10), it did not work. There were no error messages or anything and it seemed like the messages were being imported but none of my SMS apps showed the resulting changes. The original repo has the smsrestore_4.4 branch that covers the issue I had but I wasn't able to build this with Android Studio (no gradle etc).

Found your fork which added gradle, so I merged the smsrestore_4.4 changes, built it and tested it on my device successfully (followed the instructions in the README). I had to make a small change in the manifest and add another dummy class due to some conflict reported by the manifest merger in Android Studio. Also added back the icon. Submitted a PR in case you want the changes. Maybe this can be kept in another branch instead as I don't know how well tested the sms restore stuff was.

This method is very delicate as opens the possibilty for data loss
(received sms will not be shown while Slight backup is the default
messaging application). Therefore a lot of warnings are shown.
Also explain that Slight backup will try to offer a standard messaging
application change dialog.
