Summary

Rewrite the GSoC contributor guide and update the ideas page header. Modeled after contributor guides from Google, Julia, Rust, FOSSology, OpenAstronomy, Creative Commons, Apache, and Drupal.

New sections

Section What it does
Am I ready to apply? Sets expectations while being welcoming to new contributors
Before you reach out 4-step prep checklist (install, read ideas, explore code, read contributing guide)
How to introduce yourself Structured intro: background, evidence of skills with links, target project, preparation so far
Top reasons applications are rejected Transparent list so applicants know where to focus effort
Communication norms Response times, public channels, specific questions, no gendered titles
Proposal template 6 named sections: About You, Project, Technical Approach, Challenges, Timeline, Commitments
Scope guidance Avoid overscoping -- well-scoped and complete beats ambitious and incomplete
What makes a good starter PR Start from existing issues, claim before coding, check for duplicates
What to avoid Trivial PRs, massive unsolicited features, duplicate work, docs to wrong repo
AI tool policy Covers both code and proposals
If you are selected Weekly updates, proactive communication, mentors as advocates
Dev environment setup Concrete action item with screenshot expectation

Ideas page

Added callout directing applicants to the contributor guide before posting in #gsoc.

Test plan

  • Verify all internal doc links resolve
  • Verify external links (GitHub repos, docs.metaflow.org pages)
  • Review tone with mentors
  • Sidebar navigation still works (no file renames, just content changes)
