Tabular Mapping
Dataverse tabular files containing geospatial information* may be mapped via the publicly available WorldMap platform maintained by Harvard University's Center for Geographic Analysis.
-
- Examples of geospatial information include latitude/longitude coordinates, census tracts, zip codes, Boston election wards, etc
Three conditions must be met for a Dataverse file to become mappable:

If your tabular file contains latitude and longitude columns, they may be directly mapped
To make a map, these two things are joined together:
- Geospatial column(s) from your Dataverse tabular file
- e.g., Dataverse tabular file has a census tract column
- WorldMap "target layer" that contains the same geospatial information
- The WorldMap has a "target layer" containing census tract
Below are screen shots illustrating this mapping process:

This example shows a map as well as an error that one of the rows did not map

Once a map is created:
- It exists on the WorldMap platform and may be viewed there--with all of the WorldMap capabilities
- Dataverse will contain a preview of the map and links to the larger version on WorldMap
At this point, you may either return to the Dataverse or "Style the Map" based on applying Classification methods.
The map may be deleted at any time. If you are on Dataverse, click "Map Data" and click the "Delete Map" button on the lower right:
This completely removes the map and underlying data from the WorldMap platform.
