@Dexaran I think that the main use of data will be some external reference like a saleId or an invoiceID or a deliveryID for example.
I think it's good idea to have it in an event log because this way it will be more easy to query and validate it in from light clients.

The main use of data is the encoding of functions that must be performed by the token recipient when token transaction to the contract arrive.
Analogue to data of Ether transaction.
