GNN Animated Food Flow Map

An interactive web-based visualization portal for analyzing food supply chain networks using Freight Analysis Framework (FAF) data. This project provides a comprehensive view of food flow patterns across different zones and categories in the United States.

Demo

Overview

The FAF Food Flow Portal is a sophisticated data visualization tool that enables users to explore and analyze food transportation patterns across the United States. Built with modern web technologies, it provides an intuitive interface for understanding complex supply chain networks through animated flow visualizations.

Features

  • Interactive Map Visualization: Real-time animated flow visualization using deck.gl and Mapbox
  • Multiple Food Categories: Support for 7 different SCTG (Standard Classification of Transported Goods) food categories:
    • Live Animals/Fish
    • Cereal Grains
    • Other Agricultural Products
    • Animal Feed
    • Meat/Seafood
    • Milled Grain Products
    • Other Foodstuffs
  • FAF Zone Analysis: Detailed information about Freight Analysis Framework zones
  • Modern Glass UI: Sleek, responsive interface with glassmorphism design
  • Real-time Data: Dynamic loading and visualization of food flow data
  • Zone Information Panel: Detailed statistics and flow count information

Technologies Used

  • Frontend: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript
  • Mapping: Mapbox GL JS
  • Visualization: deck.gl
  • Data Processing: Excel files (XLSX format)
  • UI Design: Glassmorphism with backdrop filters

Data Structure

The project uses cleaned FAF (Freight Analysis Framework) data organized into:

  • Zone Files: FAF-ZONE INFORMATION.xlsx, FAF-ZONE STATE.xlsx
  • Food Category Data: 7 cleaned SCTG files for different food categories
  • Geographic Zones: FAF zone-based geographic divisions

Getting Started

Prerequisites

  • Modern web browser with JavaScript enabled
  • Internet connection (for Mapbox and deck.gl CDN resources)

Installation

  1. Clone or download this repository
  2. Open cutom_trips.html in a web browser
  3. The application will load automatically with the default food category (Cereal Grains)

Usage

  1. Select Food Category: Use the dropdown menu to choose from 7 different food categories
  2. Choose FAF Zone: Select specific zones for detailed analysis
  3. Explore Flows: Watch animated flow visualizations between zones
  4. View Zone Information: Click on zones to see detailed statistics
  5. Toggle Panel: Use the hamburger menu to show/hide the control panel

  • Interactive Controls: Dynamic filtering and selection of food categories and zones
  • Responsive Design: Works across different screen sizes and devices
  • Data Integration: Seamless loading and processing of Excel data files
  • Zone Analytics: Comprehensive zone information and flow statistics

Customization

The application can be customized by:

  • Modifying the data files in the NEW DATA/Cleaned_FAF_Zone_files/ directory
  • Updating the food category options in the HTML file
  • Adjusting the visualization parameters in the JavaScript code
  • Customizing the UI styling in the CSS section

Data Sources

This project utilizes data from the Freight Analysis Framework (FAF), which provides comprehensive information about freight movement patterns in the United States. The data has been cleaned and processed for optimal visualization performance.
