when increasing the game velocity you also need to increase the hero's gravity, otherwise the game will not work anymore because platforms you should be able to land on will disappear below you on the next jump. To be honest I don't know how to explain to the kids how we came up with these values, but they do seem to provide a stable game experience with increasing difficulty.
