As you know, I'm currently trying to convert from black/flake8 to ruff, while doing this, a lot of changes have come up, this is complex enough to warrant its own PR.
Ruff said this function should change because it was too nested, and I agree. This is tested enough, does not break any test while achieving 100% coverage.
