I think if we abandon the distinction between logical devices, files, and physical devices, system call interface can be greatly simplified.

OOH, while running errands, it just occurred to me that in order to make this happen, we'd need a look up table of at least 256 elements. That'd require 512 to 1024 bytes, which might not be suitable for deep embedded environments.

OTOH, you already have tables replicating the entry point vectors for drivers as it is. This will need more thought, but I think that the only way to keep things small enough to fit in a few KB of RAM is to do static dispatching, as you're currently doing things.
