less failures if TERM=dumb

When using less with TERM=dumb, which seems to be required when using OMVS from a TN3270 (TSO) session there is a warning message:

/u/lbdyck>less .gitconfig
WARNING: terminal is not fully functional
Press RETURN to continue

default = simple
.gitconfig (END)

This does not happen when using more.

Can you try adding the "know-dumb" option -d for less in your gitconfig:

...
[core]
  editor = vim
  pager = less -d

[lbdyck]

the issue is not within git - at least not that I've found (yet) but when i try using the zot less from the omvs command line.

Ok, we could try setting the default to -d when in OMVS. less -d works for you?
