Daydream feature wish: pause-resume

I've mentioned in another comment that I have this daydream where the prime-crunching programs can start/stop like prime95 can, or perhaps even better than it does now (like BOINC's mouse/keyboard-detection). After all, there are more reasons for a GPU program to yield given the weaker scheduling on GPUs. This will need to be done from APN, with or without cooperation from the programs themselves:

• If without cooperation, APN just sends the Ctrl-C eqivalent (SIGINT or the messy Windows thing)) and waits to restart the program
• If with cooperation, APN can have a pair of signals like SIGUSR1/USR2 for pause-continue on Unix without needing to worry about commandline flags.

This is a daydream so feel free to disregard.

It depends on when and how you want to pause/resume your GIMPS software. To my knowledge, no existing GIMPS software supports cooperation as you described, so adding this functionality to AutoPrimeNet directly could be complex, as there is a lot of variability in how GIMPS software is run, where some require running several instances (workers) in parallel for maximum performance or have dozens of command line arguments that need manual tuning.

This feature request may be a better fit for my Distributed Computing Scripts repository. I already have Bash scripts there that can automatically pause/resume GIMPS software on Linux, including MPrime, Mlucas, CUDALucas and GpuOwl, which could be expanded to support other GIMPS software and other Unix OSs. Currently, these scripts just support pausing when the system is in use and resuming when it is idle for a set amount of time, but they could be updated to support other use cases as well if needed.
