Naming Parts Using Solid Edge Data Management

Is there a way to name parts and assign part numbers using the Solid edge data management tool? I'm happy to help contribute to the project in some way to implement this feature!

I haven't used the Solid Edge Data Management tool. Is that what they call Built In Data Management or something else?

That is the built in data management tool. The workflow when making parts is pretty standard PLM style i.e. when you go to save the part it prompts you to generate a part number from the number generator file (a text file holding the last number generated), adding any prefixes or suffixes you specify and a revision ID. The StoreKeeper tool could either tap into the, i'm sure it's exposed in the API? or read from the number generator file itself.

Got it. I've seen some references in the API to BIDM but haven't messed with it.

I guess we could add another Save in option for it. Does that sound workable? On the Housekeeper project, a user contributed some Team Center functionality. He created a separate form for his stuff, like login, revision filtering, etc., and just passed me the data I needed. It was clean and easy to integrate into the project.

OK, you didn't mention how much programming experience you have. Is this something you would be interested in tackling?

Sorry, I kinda dropped the ball on this. When you said "contribute" I understood contribute code. That may not be your thing.

Since we don't use data management, I wouldn't get permission to add this functionality at work. I could possibly do it freelance, but would have to charge for it. If interested, please email me. If not, it won't hurt my feelings in the least -- I've got plenty of other stuff keeping me busy.
