Which microprocessor have been used for the KickSat2 mission, ATSAMD21G-A or ATSAMD51G? #78

First of all, I want to congratulate all the PyCubed team for the amazing work that you do and for sharing with all the other space enthusiasts! I have been reading the documentation regarding the KickSat2 mission. In the PyCubed smallsat paper you mention that the ATSAMD51G is used for the KickSat2 mission and that it has been radiation tested. However, in the KickSat2 Design Justification document you mention that the ATSAMD21G-A it is being used, even in the KickSat2 radiation upset justification you mention the SAMD21. Which one was used for the KickSat2 mission? Did I misunderstand the documentation, or there is an errata? |

Hi @Skodax, apologies for the delay. Both SAMD21 and SAMD51 were used during the development of PyCubed and (consequently) KitckSat2. What's nice is that, from a flight software (CircuitPython) perspective, it didn't matter which happened to be populated. I tried to used the phrase "SAMDXX family of microcontrollers" to avoid this confusion, but you clearly found areas that I had missed. Ultimately, I recall an ATSAMD21 was used on the KickSat-2 mission. However, by the time we presented PyCubed, I had transitioned entirely to the SAMD51. The SAMD51 was used on all three V-R3x spacecraft during their 2021 mission. Hope this clears things up! |
