No way to get opendsh to connect to phone hotspot

Setting up opendsh and the android auto phone to connect to a common router works.

[WiFi]
SSID=commonrouter
Password=pass
AdapterMAC=CommonMAC

Now set android auto phone to emit hotspot (this forces phone wifi to become disabled by design).
Then connect opendsh to to the same phone hotspot, good so far, can ping google etc.
However opendsh never establishes connection to android auto and doesnt work.

As you see it fail, if you turn off the phone's hotspot you can see the phone trying to quickly turn on its wifi... as if opendsh is trying to get the phone to connect to itself ???????? This seems like a bug. Is there anyway to get opendsh to connect to the hotspot of the phone wanting to serve android auto?

If i set both opendsh and android auto phone to connect to a completely different phone's hotspot, opendsh works. This is an old android10 phone with no sim card and a cracked screen...

so do i just carry both phones to get this working properly? Maybe leave phoneb in the car just as a... wifi router???
I cant set the Pi to emit a hotspot, its wifi is so unreliable. Cuts out way too much. I have a usb wifi card and just use that to get it to use wifi reliably.
No, there is not a single usb wifi card on amazon that lets you use AP mode reliably on linux. Doesn't work. Tried it on ubuntu & raspbian. Waste of time and money doing returns and waiting for shipping.

in general i think using phone hotspot is wrong direction, you would need to start a hotspot everytime you get into car?

regarding your question, in my opinion its not possible to use phone hotspot
on initial wireless connection the AA device sends wifi credentials to phone via bluetooth, the phone is trying to connect a network its already in and it fails - phone cannot be twice in this network.

The phone hotspot is on the whole day, doesn't affect battery and i just walk up to the car and it autoconnects.

If the phone is already connected to the wifi the bluetooth sends, then it simply works. It doesn't fail because its already connected...

This "connect to wifi" business sadly tells the phone to turn its wifi on and connect to the network in question. Which is impossible if its emitting a hotspot. It honestly sounds like a protocol limitation in android auto. But im not entirely sure, because if opendsh and android auto is capable of finding each other while on the same wifi network with neither of them emitting a hotspot then it has to be possible to get opendsh to connect to the android auto phone hotspot.

Did you change the RPI wifi to 5GHz? For me the cutting out did not fully disappear, but at least 90% of it is gone when I changed to 5GHz
