Hide menu items from specific roles?

I know we can show menu items to specific roles, but how can we hide them from specific roles? 

For example, I have a "Join Affiliate Program" in the menu, but once someone becomes an affiliate, I'd like to hide that menu item from their menu and show the Affiliate dropdown. I can show the dropdown based on role, but I'd like to hide a menu item based on their role as well.
