No 5V (VCC) on the shield #2

Hey there. I'm flipping through the board and schematic (in kicad) and I can't figure out where the shield gets 5v from
It seems that the shields 12v is separate from U2, which should generate the onboard 5v. The only way I can see this working, is if the arduino is powered through it's barrel-jack, and then this voltage is passed to the shield via the megas VIN pin, why not use the on-board 12v source, or at least offer a power selector jumper?
