controller_expression.blend doesn't work in 2.78c

Hi, the use of controller expressions to recognize strings and then send messages to perform actuator actions doesn't work. I tested the sensors and actuators by bypassing the expressions and they work ok. I'm not an expert in expressions or python and am unable to suggest alternative expressions or a fix.
