I really wouldn't mind if we made regex an official, optional dependency of this project. Your code may be a good starting point for that.

I made a few Android / Termux–focused builds based on v1.2.1 to make search and replace usable in environments where a system ICU library is not available.

On desktop platforms (Linux distributions with ICU, Windows, etc.), the original ICU-based implementation works very well, and I personally enjoy using it — it brings back the feeling of the classic DOS EDIT 1.0 / 2.0 and those wonderful moments from that era.

For Android / Termux, I added two variants:

Full build: uses a native regex implementation to provide search and replace without ICU. The binary is larger (about 5× compared to the original), but still well under 1 MB.

Lite build: removes regex support entirely and keeps only plain text search and replace. This version is intended for editing configuration files and small text files. In practice, most users (probably 80% or more) only rely on simple find/replace, and removing regex keeps the binary very small (only ~10 KB larger than the original).making it suitable for users who prefer a minimal feature set.

I also added a VS Code–like search counter that shows the total number of matches and the current match index. I find this extremely useful when editing text, and it might be a nice optional addition to the original version as well. One trade-off is that it requires a full-buffer scan on search, which could affect performance on extremely large files, although this has not been an issue in typical use cases.

The non-ICU builds are intended only for environments such as Android / Termux. Where available, using the system-provided ICU remains the best default choice and is important for keeping the executable size small.
