fail importing a tsv file with more than 1000 columns

pgfutter gives the number of columns in the table (~1100 columns), and provides an array of column names. however the table didn't go through the database. 
the same command line code was used to import a 5-column table, which works perfectly. 
Is there a limited number of columns that this software can apply?
