Personaly, I upload to github, then link my github and zenodo account then create a version with DOI which I add in the github read me, then there is a possibility for release.

there should maybe be a sentence for when things need to happen. Personnally, I'd do a release upon submission of a manuscript, then a new one after peer revewers' comment.

However with those working in LRZ GitLab with sensitive data, I suppose it is easier to only release the final version upon manuscript acceptance so they don't need to do the trasnfer and securoty checks twice.
