explain the difference between a quarto project and opening a quarto doc in a .Rproj ?

Good point! Shouldn't we address this in the tutorial Introduction to Quarto by directly creating Quarto projects?

I'm not sure. Most people will ever only need to use a .qmd doc, not a project, just to write a simple analysis report. without need for a website, book, extension ect.

As I understand it, the current state of affairs is the following:

The tutorials Introduction to version control, Introduction to R, and Introduction to Quarto all work with RStudio projects. Only this Code Publishing Tutorial uses Quarto projects:

If I understand your point correctly, your issue is that while three tutorials use RStudio projects, one tutorial suddenly introduces a new way to do things (Quarto projects) and this should be explained.

I don't disagree, but I think that Quarto projects should already be introduced in the tutorial on Quarto:

I agree that most people probably won't create websites, books, or extensions the first time they create a project. But I would also say that even with very simple analysis reports, creating projects is a best practice (and we don't even teach people do do things without projects in our tutorials).
