Preparing for the wave of AI generated cards

Hello @lervag! I recall seeing an issue (which I was unable to locate again) about converting cards from their state in the anki database BACK into markdown files. I was wondering if by chance this is something you are still interested, especially with the prevalence of AI tools to generate cards from documents (PDFs, docx, text, etc.). If you are still interested in this project, I would certainly like to help and can take some suggestions on how to be useful. Much appreciated!

This is sort of already possible: you can use apy list-cards or apy list-notes to list your cards and notes in Markdown format. You can add a query to filter the output.

You could also potentially use apy update-from-file to keep a large Markdown file with notes in sync with your Anki database. I don't use this myself, and I'm not sure how well it works, but it's there and I think it works well.

AI tools are getting better, but I would advice that you apply a lot of caution when you create a large amount of cards in bulk from documents with AI! Even the modern best models still halucinate, and there's a big chance that you can get bad cards.

I know it's time consuming, but I would still advice that you write most of your cards/notes yourself. And if you do use AI, then do read the generated cards and validate that they are indeed correct and good.
