Okay so it's a ruby 2.5.3 issue

maybe ruby 2.5.3 and g++ 4.8?

Not suggesting this is the correct workaround but should do the trick for anyone else that runs into this

I'm experiencing the same issue with ruby 2.6.1 on Amazon Linux AMI release 2018.03.

Ah... see #42. In my case, this fixed it:

yum install gcc72-c++
