Creating a new screen does not preserve default-directory

I'm using elscreen from evil; when evil creates a tab (evil-tabs-tabedit), it calls elscreen-create. This function doesn't preserve the default-directory, so the new screen always defaults to the home directory, which breaks evil's :tabe[dit].
