Chords with duration in 2 measure bars

We have a situation where we have to play a chord with a duration of 8 in a time signature of 6/8. 
What happens? Basically, the chord plays 6 beats and the other 2 are silent. Can we make the chord sound for 8 beats? @grimmdude
