Does not support .xls files (HSSF) yet

Currently only support .xlsx files (XSSF). Should be very straightforward to support HSSF since its part of Apache POI's capabilities.

you can modify the constructor function Xcelite(File file) like this:

Well, you could easily clone the repo and just modify the source code by
yourself. Nobody seems to be maintaining it currently.

Using the WorkbookFactory would take care of this for you and be an even simpler change, i.e.:
public Xcelite(File file) {
try {
this.file = file;
workbook = WorkbookFactory.create(file);
} catch (Exception e) {
throw new RuntimeException(e);
}
}
