Mike,
I used your code to make some plots and it was super helpful! Thanks for sharing it!
I used Codex to fix some "issues" related to how I was using the script, so I decided to share the fixes in case you want to implement them (see the issues I submitted).
I know that a pull request would've been easier but I have an automatic formatting thing on emacs that adjusts/aligns all the code as it saves, so I didn't want to do a PR with all of that. Also it would've been a PR with 3 distinct issues and that's not very helpful. I don't do these github things very often so I'm not very organized.
My version of the code is currently on /glade/derecho/scratch/frediani/step/mpas_plot if you want to diff it there.
