I just installed TaskTrove (decided to try it with a clean slate after passing on it a few months ago). I've seen a lot of updates, but my very first impression is that the lefts idebar is incredibly bloated with stuff I don't want and/or don't want to see.
Issues
Why do the logo, search, and new task bits take up like 30% of this available space? And, even going deeper, why is there like XXX pixels of margin from the logo and the buttons? It's all truly just wasted space.
There's barely any room for projects at this point on a brand new fresh install.
If I don't want to use habits or calendar, is that just going to forever take up space on the sidebar?
"Recent" and "Completed" are showing the same thing, except "Recent" is basically a filter for "Completed", so why do these things need to be separate? And, to be completely honest, how often am I either going to click on either of these things? Barely ever... if we're being honest (unless you're a task horder and need to refer to the past all the time).
There's just so many ... things ... being thrown at you all at once. It feels chaotic and like a mess. There's so much extra stuff that people might not need or ever use.
Solutions
Make the logo smaller. Even better, get rid of it (or make an option to do so). I don't care about branding. No one does. But if you need branding, make it as tiny as possible.
Make the search and task buttons like 25% of their current height and get rid of the top margin. There's no need for these to be so huge. It honestly doesn't make much sense that they are separate buttons compared to all the other UI features, but if they are going to be distinct, at least make it not take up 25% of the space.
Give us toggles for features we don't want to see on the sidebar. If we don't use habits or calendar, don't force us to look at it.
Consolidate the top-most sidebar options and get rid of stuff people won't be using on a daily basis (completed/recent).
There's no need to deviate from what works. Copy (read: take great inspiration from) Todoist's or TickTick's sidebar contents and call it a day. There's just too much going on with TaskTrove that it just makes it feel very unstable and unfocused.
