Hacks:
- Question 1: Crowdsourcing is a type of data collection method that utilizes a distributed system of resources or individuals to contribute to a larger goal, oftentimes crowdsourcing is used for tasks that are computationally expensive or vast and requires more resources than one individual or organization has. One example is, Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk or AMT) which is a crowdsourcing marketplace that businesses or researchers can use to outsource parts of their jobs. Another example, is innovation challenges from companies like Dell that have innovation challenges were multiple people submit ideas that can be used to generate new products/ideas, and typically the winner of the challenge gets some award.
- Question 2: IKEA's "Co-create" project is a crowdsourcing effort where the company collaborates with customers, designers, and the general public to develop new products or refine existing ones. The initiative aims to tap into the creativity, expertise, and feedback of a large group of people to create better, more innovative products. Some objectives include Product Innovation, Customer-Centric Design, Improving Sustainability, and Enhancing Brand Loyalty.
- Question 3: Crowdsourcing can lead to quality control issues, as contributions often come from individuals without the necessary expertise, which can result in subpar or inaccurate outcomes. For example, Wikipedia, has been criticized for containing inaccuracies or biased information because anyone can contribute without oversight. This has led to concerns from academic institutions or experts who argue that crowdsourced platforms lack the rigor and reliability of traditional sources. Additionally, crowdsourcing can sometimes exploit workers by paying them little or offering no compensation, which some groups view as unethical, especially in cases where companies benefit significantly from the labor of many contributors without adequately compensating them.
- Question 4: (https://geohub-poway.hub.arcgis.com/search?tags=Transportation) This is a public dataset from Poway's Open Data Portal that has transportation and other ancillary data that can be used to train an effective model or system for autonomous vehicles to navigate effectively. Other datasets could be used as well, and or in combination with the data from Poway's Open Data Portal
