support navigation keys

This doesn't feel that important, but I think it would be nice to have the ability to navigate with the keyboard (and the special mouse buttons) like in a webbrowser.

What I mean is:

• Navigation keys mainly on laptops
• Navigation keys on mice
• Backspace = go back
• maybe something like Alt-left = back, Alt-Right = forward

The problem is, that this needs a navigation-system, a linked list with the navigation steps and the current position. GoBack checks, if there is a position before the current and if there is, moves one step back, GoForward checks if there's a position after the current and if there is, moves one step forward

We are talking about the navigation on the shelves, right? Not between tabs?

If so, I agree that at the moment it is a bit lackluster. The reason for this was that I did not imagine very well the scope of this zone, notably in terms of organisation. I thought at first that the folder structure would not be relevant - though I can see now that it serves a purpose.

I am afraid that if we continue adding more functionnalities, like navigation, we will simply end up re-coding a file browser... which already exists. Maybe we could rethink the interface, somehow?

• Do we really need a specialized Shelves class doing what it does at the moment? I kind of liked the metaphor of a library, where you physically store the notebooks (a bit like the interface on GoG.com), and select them like a book. But now that we have folders, it looks like we are simply reinventing the wheel.
• If we keep this class, what could we bring to it in terms of user experience that would set it apart from a simple file browser? I guess the wow factor is just not there at the moment, but maybe we could bring it? If so, with what?

I don't know, I had the tabs in mind, too. But it's strange to have two different zones to navigate with the same tools at the same time and we have the hotkeys for the tabs allready. I just often find myself pressing the back-key when I clicked on the wrong notebook.

I think, it's no problem to reimplement a simple file browser. You're just more flexible with the design this way. If it becomes too complex, you can allways go back and take a ready-to-use file browser widget
