Maybe I should just create an animation on click, so Wayfire has something to paint in the clicked area, which will make the popup appear

Okay, no animation was needed. I compiled and restarted version 0.11.0-3c9a7712 (Jan 22, 2026) on the master branch with wlroots-0.19.2. Initially, scale and expo only worked after moving the mouse cursor, but now it's working fine. It seems like a bug triggered under certain conditions, though I'm not sure exactly what caused it or what was happening. If you'd like, you can close the issue, and I'll open a new one if I ever encounter this again.
