Rewaita successfully theming GTK applications but not generating shell theme

Rewaita does not seem to be generating themes whenever I select a scheme in the app. I've checked both .themes and .local/share/themes and there is no Rewaita folder in either of these folders (and so the shell theme does not show up in GNOME Tweaks). I've checked permissions with the app and all permissions seem to be set correctly. However, the GTK theming works out of the box, with apps being themed according to the scheme, however I can't seem to theme the shell.

Have you looked in .local/share/dark and .local/share/light?

Regarding shell styling, on my system styles will adjust the color of the top bar and settings pop-up, and the notifications also. The dash/dock is unstyled though and will remain default GNOME grey, I believe this is currently unimplemented in rewaita, maybe more difficult to implement than the rest.

Edit: just saw this, sorry, what distro are you using?

The other file touched by Rewaita is gnome-shell.css, which should be copied over from a folder similar to .local/share/themes/rewaita/gnome-shell

Different distros might keep this in different places, these locations were observed on a system running CachyOS (Arch Linux).

I think this can be done easily, I just didn't bother because the background color can be set in the extension. Looking back I don't see my rationale for not setting it in the theme.

On the Flatpak all system paths should be static, including the one that would place it in .local/share/themes. Although in the AUR build there seems to be some issues.

Hi, apologies all but I wrote out this bug report, turned off the computer and went to sleep. Woke up and it seemed to work perfectly fine in the morning! I didn't do anything between it not working and it working, so I frankly don't know what was going on. Apologies for the bother!

If it is of any interest, I'm using Nobara with GNOME 48.

Rewaita flatpak version requires a restart to apply rewaita styles into shell themes, Rewaita installed as a package requires no restart and will apply them instantly.

I had restarted numerous times that evening (I had read the user guide which told me to restart) and none of the restarts resulted in the option becoming available in GNOME Tweaks. Maybe it was because it was a full shutdown rather than a simple restart?

I've seen similar issues in other things. Mischievous electrons in your motherboard needed to be flushed away with full power off maybe haha. Takes like 30 seconds usually to flush them all out.

I hope that you will have good days and continue enjoying Rewaita, sword puffin has done great work building it. 😀

Because I can't reproduce this error or think of any other reason than a curse I will close this issue. It probably has something to do with xdg-desktop-portal, but I have no idea. I will add a section to the readme for debugging this as the solution is at least consistent.

I have the same problem on Fedora 42, and shell theme did not generate after a full shutdown, or even after few days

Check Flatseal to make sure you haven't restricted access to ~/.local/share/themes.

If that isn't the problem, try running:

sudo flatpak override --filesystem=~/.local/share/themes:rw

The permission to write to that directory is given in the manifest, but maybe it isn't working right.

I use flatpost which has a permission system integrated into the store and Rewaita has access to this folder, but I can see that the app didn't even created the folder.

I have it hardcoded to make ~/.local/share/themes if it doesn't exist. I know we shouldn't be going down to this, but try making the folder manually and see if that gets it working.

Again, that shouldn't be necessary as Rewaita should make the folder but I am out of ideas.

Ok, it didn't generate any theme when I created the folder UNTIL I turned off my computer. Now after booting and clicking on a theme, it generates it. I'm not sure why the app doesn't create the folder, it also happens on my other laptop with the default GNOME Software app.
