native C/bindgen constraints were and are increasingly starting to feel hacky. We punted on this investigation due to time constraints but we should revisit it. The big question is embedded C/Rust support for protobuf

Micropb appears to be recommended by Embassy very recently. They've archived noproto in the direct ecosystem and they recommend this crate now.
