Compiling on MacOS (including M1)

Using install.sh from MANUAL_INSTALL directory results in several errors with:

• boost - newer clang is incompatible with older boost version
• boost.mpi - newer boost (1_78_0) fails with:

error: Unable to find file or target named
error:     '/mpi//mpi'
error: referred to from project at
error:     'libs/mpi/build'

• netcdf-cxx - with newer clang the c++20 version header conflicts with VERSION file when VERSION file is on an -I path. See https://trac.macports.org/ticket/62912
• repastHPC - if you've installed mpich from source using install.sh, the mpi compiler wrappers may not be found, resulting in errors like: configure: error: cannot not find the flags to link with Boost mpi when trying ./install.sh rhpc
• repastHPC - Missing float.h header in GridComponents.cpp, results in error:

src/repast_hpc/GridComponents.cpp:165:64: error: use of undeclared identifier 'DBL_MAX'
      if(out[i] >= maxs[i])       out[i] = nextafter(maxs[i], -DBL_MAX);
                                                               ^
src/repast_hpc/GridComponents.cpp:166:64: error: use of undeclared identifier 'DBL_MAX'
      else if(out[i] < mins[i])   out[i] = nextafter(mins[i],  DBL_MAX);

Specific to M1 -

• default boost-lib-suffix of mt is missing -a64 (once a new boost is used to avoid the above problem)

To fix the boost issue:

1. Download newer boost (e.g., https://boostorg.jfrog.io/artifactory/main/release/1.78.0/source/boost_1_78_0.tar.gz)
2. Untar the repast distribution archive.
3. Move the new boost tar.gz into repast_hpc-2.3.1/MANUAL_INSTALL
4. Edit the BOOST_VERSION var in install.sh to read BOOST_VERSION="1_78_0"

./install.sh boost should now work

To fix the netcdf-cxx issue, edit the netcdf-cxx section of install.sh to rename the VERSION file. This needs to come after running configure. The full section, starting on line 103, should now look like:

Fixing missing mpi compiler errors when running ./install.sh.

When installing mpich using install.sh, mpich is added to PATH and the MPI_COMPILER_INVOCATION variable is set. However, if you use install.sh to install the components separately, i.e.,

$ ./install.sh mpich
$ ./install.sh boost
...

then those vars won't be set and the mpicxx compiler wrappers may not be found. This can be fixed by adding them back in the relevant section. For example,

For the correct boost --with-boost-lib-suffix on an M1 mac, replace

--with-boost-lib-suffix=mt \ with --with-boost-lib-suffix=mt-a64 \

Note that there is no - before mt.

To fix boost mpi compilation failing with:

error: Unable to find file or target named

I did: sudo ln -s $HOME/sfw/openmpi-4.1.2/bin/mpic++ /usr/local/bin/mpic++. For some reason various incantations of using mpi didn't work, but symlinking to where boost defaults to looking for the mpi wrapper worked.

Undeclared identifier DBL_MAX

Add #include <float.h> to src/repast_hpc/GridComponents.cpp on line 49, just below #include <math.h> and try the rhpc install again.

1. Add newest boost to distribution
2. Update the install.sh to recognize M1 and set the boost flag appropriately, if possible.
3. Add the above to the troubleshooting section (add that section if it doesn't exit) in INSTALL.txt
