The code is terrible

I put this together very, very quickly, and the code is awful.

• Use of modules ... but also of bare "index.css" classes
• The list selection/etc. is not efficient
• The function that sets the modal is being passed a few levels down rather than using, e.g., context
• Duplicated logic
• etc.
