Syntax error during ./configure on Debian 13

Hello
I am trying to build wandio (to be able to build libtrace, and then libprotoindent).
My Os is Debian 13 Trixie.

./bootstrap.sh looks ok and its return code is 0.
I then do ./configure and I get this error:

./configure: line 18234: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
./configure: line 18234: ` '''
make: *** [Makefile:380: config.status] Error 2

I also tested with Debian 12 Bookworm and I have the same problem.
I however do not have this issue with Debian 11 Bullseye.
I guess it is a compatibility problem with automake or libtool.

If I do autoupdate and then ./configure the error disappears.
But it re-appears when I do make (I am guessing that make is performing another ./configure).

It looks like line 103 of configure.ac needs to be changed from AC_PROG_GCC_TRADITIONAL to AC_PROG_CC.
