Unclear how to execute Julia code inline in IDE

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a Julia development environment with REPL integration and interactive code execution capabilities, similar to what's available in VSCode with the Julia extension. I understand this might involve Jupyter kernel integration, but I'm having difficulty finding comprehensive setup instructions. While the official Julia documentation mentions relevant tools and provides some links, I haven't been able to locate step-by-step guidance that explains:

• Which specific tools/extensions are needed for interactive Julia development
• How to configure REPL integration for inline code execution
• The purpose and setup process for each recommended component

I have this keymap. It sends the current line to the REPL:

However, it's not perfect because it does not automatically detect code blocks like function or struct as in VSCode.

@fdekerme: you can select the surrounding block (e.g., a function or a struct) before copying to the clipboard:

"alt-cmd-e cmd-c ctrl-` cmd-v ctrl-` down"

...or a paragraph (a block surrounded by blank lines):

"ctrl-up shift-ctrl-down cmd-c ctrl-` cmd-v ctrl-` down"

I find it useful to have different bindings for single lines or blocks.

Edit/note: This approach is fine to run code in the integrated terminal. It's not like VSC's inline code execution though.

I'm also confused about how to get this working.

The repl: refresh kernelspecs and repl: run commands do nothing, and the repl: sessions command shows this:

The "Install Kernels" link shown points to the Zed REPL documentation. The only instructions there are to install Julia, install the Julia Zed extension, run repl: refresh kernelspecs, and run repl: run on some line of code. But that isn't doing anything.

I have seen this copy-paste keymap workaround here and in the Zed issues, but it isn't really working for me either.

The second ctrl-` to switch focus back to the editor is minimizing the REPL panel and hiding the result of the code execution. Also, are you just starting a Julia REPL with julia in the terminal window? If I don't do that first, then the line is just sent to PowerShell. Is there a start Julia REPL command comparable to VSCode's Alt+J, Alt+O to get the attached REPL? I don't see any Zed commands searching "julia".

Oh, I see, there are several concepts now and some work, others don't (still). I can add a section to the README for a basic setup (Zed + terminal workflow -- that's what I use). I'm busy at the moment so it might take a week.

A few points I should cover (memory aid):

1. AFAIK, neither Zed's "REPL mode" nor "inline code execution" does work with Julia. So, we have to use Zed's integrated terminal. @nathanrboyer: yes, we need to start julia --project=YOUR_PATH in the terminal. The language server and the interactive REPL are two independent processes.
2. Selecting code in the buffer and executing it in the terminal. Zed introduced action sequences a couple weeks ago. Those are more robust than the key stroke sequences discussed above because keymaps may be customized or platform dependent.

I think the README shouldn't get too long and some collaborative document would be a better fit. Everybody has a different setup…

I've added a section "Running code in the REPL" to README.md. I realized that action sequences don't play well with the terminal. Also, simulating ctrl-` in the terminal to go back to the editor without hiding the terminal panel doesn't work anymore so, I had to look for a workaround.

Please review the README and let me know if anything is unclear. I haven’t covered Zed’s REPL Mode or Jupyter Notebooks because I don’t use either and have no experience with them. Hopefully, someone else can contribute…
