Can't load the project in unity

this is a really cool project and now that I got a headset I want to try it out for another project.

It seems that after the hassle of installing unity, getting the older version, getting a login, etc... I still can't use it and it crashes when I try to open the project.

This is more of a rant towards unity than anything else.

I still want to try and run this though. Is there any "easy" way to test out your project?
Any plans to update to a recent version of unity whichi might be easier to debug for myself?

Hi. Thank you for your interest.
I thought a lot about your comment, and about how much I hate that people have to build this project from source, and then bake out all the source data, before they can use the app. I did some experiments today on reducing the file size and was able to get the project down to almost 1 gig. In the 3 years since I made this project, it looks like GitHub has raised their files size limits, so I am able to upload a full release of the project (so you don't have to build it from source.)

It also looks like this project's VR libraries are woefully out of date, so I'm dusting off my VR goggles and updating the code to work with the current state of SteamVR. I should be able to get that done this weekend. In the mean time, feel free to download the desktop version of the Placeviewer that I uploaded here.

I'm gonna try and play with the built version this weekend.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to game engines and VR but I do know how to code in python and R.

What would you suggest would be a good way to replicate this work without using unity? Seems like a big hassle for small scale projects.

Unity would actually be my recommendation for any small-scale 3D project. I don't want to say it is super easy to learn Unity, but Unity is as easy to learn as any engine can be. The nice thing about Unity is that you can always google up answers to your questions about it. Its online community is without peer.

The only "simpler" alternative would be a pure shader viewer like Shadertoy. The PlaceViewer is 90% just a shader-viewer, but the other 10% (the interactivity) would not be possible just using HLSL or GLSL.

I was able to test out the desktop version this weekend and it works perfectly.
Can't wait to try the VR version :)

Hi!, I was trying to play the Desktop Build on VR using my Oculus and Virtual Desktop but I can't make it work. What does it need to run in VR? or should I try from the source code?

I found the best way to access the VR app is thru AirLink (oculus app).
