build fails on ALMA linux 9

Trying to build elprep on a new ALMA9 (~= RHEL9) system.
The distribution-provided GO version on this OS is 1.18.9, and I get the following error when trying to build elprep:
$ go get -u github.com/exascience/elprep
go: go.mod file not found in current directory or any parent directory.
'go get' is no longer supported outside a module.
To build and install a command, use 'go install' with a version,
like 'go install example.com/cmd@latest'

or run 'go help get' or 'go help install'.

I know nothing of GO, but I randomly tried
$ go install github.com/exascience/elprep@5.1.2
this produced another error.
