Overview

A background processing engine that connects to your email inbox (via IMAP/OAuth) and automatically extracts transaction details from merchant receipts and invoices.

Runs entirely on your own server—your emails never leave your machine.

How It Works

1. Connect your email - OAuth flow for Gmail/Outlook (read-only access)
2. Automatic scanning - Cron job runs on your self-hosted server
3. Smart extraction - YAML-based merchant templates + trained ML fallback
4. Monarch sync - Creates/updates transactions with itemized splits via Eclosion

How Merchant Templates Work

Each merchant has a YAML definition file that describes how to parse its emails. Contributors can add support for new stores without writing code—just define the email patterns and extraction rules.

Tech Stack

• Python backend (matches existing Eclosion stack)
• IMAP + OAuth2 for email access
• APScheduler for cron scheduling
• Hybrid extraction: deterministic templates + trained ML model for unrecognized merchants

Privacy

Since this runs entirely on your self-hosted server:

• Your email credentials stay on your machine
• Receipt data is processed locally
• Nothing is sent to external services (except Monarch API for syncing transactions)
